Howard Zelling Chambers was founded by Neville Rochow (now SC) and Steve Roder (now Registrar of the Supreme Court) in 1997.
When Neville went to the Bar he joined other chambers and was there from 1989 to 1992. He decided that he needed more space and moved to a new office in Flinders Street. He was joined there by Steve Roder.
In 1997 space became available in the (then) SGIC Building and Neville and Steve took up occupancy. In stages, the premises they had were enlarged and moved to the 12th floor to become the chambers’ present rooms.
The chambers were named in 1999. They were named after Howard Zelling who had encouraged Neville to go to the Bar.
Howard Zelling devoted almost 50 years of his life to the law. He was admitted as a legal practitioner in 1938, and took silk in 1962. He was President of the Law Council of Australia from 1966 to 1968, and was appointed to the Supreme Court Bench in 1969, until his retirement in 1986. He lectured and examined at the University of Adelaide. He was Chairman of the South Australian Law Reform Committee for over 20 years. He was made a CBE in 1969, was awarded the degree of Doctor of the University in 1984, and was made an Officer in the Order of Australia in 1986. He died in 2001.
